Ain't no cure for love (1988-1993) |

I imagined that since we are in that religious
frame of mind, when the Prince of peace was hanging on the cross,He looked up
at the Heavens and He said those words:"Elie Elie,la'masabachtha'ni,my
Lord,my Lord, why hast thou forsaken me?".And He looked around Him,from
mountain to mountain and horizon to horizon, and He knew a lever had been thrown in the Cosmos
and he said ",It is finished".And He looked down at the Romans
and the Jews,at all those expressions of
joy, revenge, sadism, remorse, indifference, joy.He looked down at those faces and
He knew for certain there ain't no cure for love. |
|
It seems to me that when the Prince of Peace was hanging from the cross he
looked toward the heaven and he cried out those immortal words "My
Lord, my Lord, why hast thou forsaken me ? " And then he looked
around him from horizon to horizon and He understood that a cosmic lever
had been thrown in the Universe and nothing would be the same as it was
before. And he said "consummatum est - it is finished." And he
looked beneath him, at the Romans and the Jews and all the mankind
looking up at him with the various positions of indifference, guilt,
remorse, ecstasy, indifference. And he understood then, finally, what it
was to be a human. He understood there ain't no cure for love... |
|
It doesn't matter wether we found ourselves in the loneliness of separation
or the vertigo of union, everyone finally learns there ain't no cure for
love... |
|
When He was hangin' on the
cross He looked about Him and He said " Why hast thou forsaken me? ".And
He looked around Him,from mountain to mountain. He understood that a lever had
been thrown in the Cosmos and He said "It is finished".And then
He looked below Him at the human faces of envy, greed, joy ,indifference, revenge
and then He knew for certain that there ain't no cure for love.... |

When Jesus was this deity which many of you do not believe in,when He was hangin from a tree,He looked up at the
Heavens, and He said "My Lord My Lord Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me ?" And then He looked around Him and He understood that a lever had been thrown in the
universe and He said "It is finished" and then He looked at His feet
and He saw the faces of men and women, faces of indifference, resentment, love
ecstasy, indifference.... And looking at these human faces, He knew for sure there
ain't no cure for Love... |
|
|
| sung as an additional verse I have no place else to go When the sweetest voice that I ever heard Whisper to my soul I don't need to be forgiven For lovin' you so much You see it's written in the Scriptures It's written in the... There ain't no cure, there ain't no cure, there ain't no cure for love. |

Oh thank you very much friends
for this very gracious welcome. It's a great honor to play here this evening. I
wanted to come and play this show for many years and we are very fortunate to
be able to do so. I appreciate it very much. I only had one tricky moment in
this City. It was when we were passing a Shoe Hospital. One of my boots which
has a long history of hypochondria cried out pitifully. My whole Cadillac flash before my
eyes..... When the Prince of Peace was hanging from that wooden beam, He cast
His eyes skyward and realizing for the first time his full human predicament, He
cried out "Why hast hou forsaken me ?" Imediately He felt the relief
of a brusque embracing of shaving lotion* and He understood that a lever
had been thrown in the Cosmos, and nothing would ever be the same again. And He
said "Consummatus mas! It is finished". And then He looked beneath Him, looked at
the human faces, the faces of indifference, greed, ecstasy, innocence, despair.
He looked at the human faces and then He understood thoroughly there ain't no
cure for love. *In Portland(28/10/88) the prologue said "...and then with a sense of relief, with a relief a man feels when he puts on shaving lotion after difficult shave..." |
| Thank
you for your silence. You might have asked me for a song I have not
rehearsed. When the Prince of Peace was hanging from the branch in His
final tree, and He looked down at the Romans and the Jews, and He saw
the faces of bewilderment and envy and greed and despair and melancholy,
a lever was thrown in the cosmos. And He looked down at these anxious
faces and He knew, He knew for certain, He knew at last, He knew with a
finality that He had never known before, there ain't no cure for love. |
|
When the Prince of Peace was hanging from his final tree and he looked down at
the people beneath him, the Roman soldiers, the Pharisees, the Sadducees , the
Hellenist, the Jews. And he saw their up-turned faces. The faces of anger, envy,
bewilderment, greed, despair. He looked into those faces and he felt that a
lever had been thrown in the cosmos and nothing ever would be the same again.
And He looked down at them and He knew for certain, He knew for sure, He knew
for all time, there ain't no cure for love. |
|
When the Prince of Peace
gazed down at the faces looking up at Him,the faces of envy, anger, envy, despair,He didn't know why,He just
happened to like them all.He knew,He knew for certain there was no
getting away from this dismal reality:There ain't no cure for love. |
| When the Prince of Peace was hanging
from His final tree,He looked at the people beneath Him,the past, His
bleeding thighs,at the faces of envy, anger, greed, despair, melancholy and
he felt that a lever was thrown in the universe and He knew nothing
would ever be the same again, and despite His feelings, despite what He
knew, despite His experience,He knew for certain that there ain't no cure
for Love.... |
|
When the Prince of Peace was hanging from His final tree, He looked down at
the people looking up at Him. He saw the faces of anger, envy, regret,
despair, melancholy, animosity, hatred. He looked down at them and He
felt a lever thrown in the universe and He knew that nothing would ever
be the same again. And He knew for certain, He finally knew that there
ain't no cure for love. |
| Personal
note : This comment of Leonard appeared just after a question of the
interviewer about "ClosingTime". I thought my song that talked about AIDS was "Ain't No Cure For Love" which I had a kind of reference to and you know there is a condom company in Canada about to put up an ad in Canada and I've let them use that (?) "Ain't No Cure". |
| When
Jesus Christ was hanging from his final branches, He looked beneath him
at the foot of the cross, at the upturned faces, faces of anger,
envy, regret, contempt, bewilderment, indifference. And He heard the
voices crying out, "Get a life, get a life." He knew for
certain that a lever had been thrown in the cosmos and nothing would
ever be the same again. He knew for sure, He knew for certain, He knew
without a doubt, He knew grand finality, that there ain't no cure for
love. |
